Man charged with murder over Dublin hostel stabbing

A 40-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man in Dublin in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Robert Murphy, with an address at Harrington Street Hostel in Dublin, was charged with the murder of Jamie Kavanagh at the hostel.

Mr Kavanagh was attacked during a row at the hostel where he lived.

The 24-year-old from west Dublin had been stabbed and was taken to St James's Hospital, but later died there from his injuries.

Robert Murphy, who also lived in the hostel, but in separate accommodation, was brought to the Dublin District Court charged with murder.

Detective Sergeant Tim O'Sullivan gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He told the court he arrested Mr Murphy just before 2.30pm and, when he was charged with the murder of Mr Kavanagh 40 minutes later he made no reply.

There was no application for bail, as bail cannot be granted at the District Court in a murder case.

Jamie Kavanagh was 24 years old

Mr Murphy was granted free legal aid after the court was told he was unemployed and in receipt of social welfare

His solicitor Katie Dowling said he had certain medical needs and Judge John Hughes directed he receive the appropriate medical attention while in custody.

He remanded Mr Murphy in custody to appear again by video link at Clover Hill District Court next Wednesday.
