Two men have been jailed for the murder of a 40-year-old man who was shot in north county Dublin almost three years ago and died 13 months later in hospital.
Barry Wolverson was shot at Madigan's Yard, Swords, Co Dublin, on 17 January 2020 and died on 21 February 2021.
Robert Redmond, 34, of Streamville Road, Kilbarrack, in Dublin, and Bernard Fogarty, also 34, from Cromcastle Court, Kilmore in Coolock, Dublin, were convicted of murder.
Both men have numerous convictions for drugs, guns and violent crime.
Redmond and Fogarty are violent, dangerous and recidivist criminals who have been heavily involved in drugs, firearms and serious and organised crime for years.
Fogarty has 46 previous convictions, and Redmond has 93.
Mr Wolverson, a father-of-four, had rented space at the yard and his partner was expecting a child at the time.
The businessman died in hospital 13 months after the shooting and the charges against Redmond and Fogarty were upgraded to murder.
The killers were connected to the murder by DNA, forensics and CCTV of them coming and going from the scene. They were arrested 300 metres from a burning getaway car.
Fogarty was caught with a lighter in his hand and the smell of petrol from his tracksuit bottoms.
In the garda station he tried to wash his hands with Lynx shower gel before they could be forensically swabbed.
He was seen on camera buying three firelogs, two of which were found in the burning car the next day, and one in his own car.
Gunshot residue was found on Redmond's hands and clothes.
He later claimed he was being framed by people unknown for something he did not do.
Another man, Gerard Wildman, was shot in the lower back that day but survived and refused to cooperate with the investigation.
Redmond and Fogarty were also convicted of that crime as well as possession of firearms and ammunition.
In a victim impact statement, Lindsay Wolverson said her brother Barry never got to meet his youngest son and his murder had changed the family’s life forever.
Mr Justice Michael McGrath said the murder was pre-planned, premeditated and carried out in a cold blooded manner and Redmond and Fogarty were sentenced to the mandatory term of life in prison.
They were also sentenced to five years for the attack on Gerard Wildman and 12 years for possession of firearms and ammunition.
These sentences are to run concurrent to the murder sentence.
