Woman charged in connection with Lisa Thompson murder

A mother of three has appeared in court charged in connection with the murder of Lisa Thompson who was found stabbed to death in her home in Ballymun six months ago.

40-year-old Deirdre Arnold from Briarfield Grove, Kilbarrack, Dublin, is accused of impeding the apprehension or prosecution of the alleged principal offender in the case.

She was remanded in custody with consent to bail until next Thursday.

A drug-prevention worker, Ms Arnold was brought by detectives from Ballymun Garda Station before the Dublin District Court this morning to face a charge in connection with the murder of Ms Thompson.

The mother of two young teenagers - a boy and a girl - was found dead at her home in Sandyhill Gardens in Ballymun on 10 May.

The 52-year-old had been attacked and stabbed several times.

Her children were not in the house at the time.

Detective Garda Jennifer Keegan gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution in court today.

She told the court that she arrested Ms Arnold at her home in Kilbarrack at 8.17am this morning.

The accused was taken to Ballymun Garda Station where she was charged. She made no reply to the charge.

Ms Arnold did not speak during the brief court hearing.

There was no garda objection to bail on condition that she live at home, observe a curfew between 10pm and 6am, sign on every Monday and Friday at Raheny Garda Station, have no contact with any witness including the co-accused in the case, surrender her passport and not apply for another one.

Defence solicitor Edward Bradbury asked that the court dispense with the condition of an independent surety, because he said she has been in regular contact with the gardaí on this issue, has not evaded justice and was in court today.

He also said she was the mother of three children who had never been in court before.

However, Detective Garda Keegan told the court that the offence carries a sentence of up to 10 years and the DPP had directed trial on indictment before the Central Criminal Court.

Judge Gerard Jones remanded Ms Arnold in custody with consent to bail on her own bond of €100 and a €500 cash lodgement or independent surety.

She is due back before the Dublin District Court next Thursday.
