Man who provided gun in shooting that left woman paralysed jailed

A man who provided the gun used to shoot and paralyse a woman in front of her daughter last year has been jailed for nine-and-a-half years.

Joseph Byrne with an address at La Touche Road in Bluebell in Dublin pleaded guilty to gun offences and apologised to his victim.

However, Sinead Connolly who has known Byrne all her life said she would never accept his apology and told him he had no regard for her life or her eight-year-old daughter that day.

Mr Justice Paul McDermott said the 34-year-old bears enormous culpability for facilitating and participating in these awful events.

The fact that he brought a gun into an already volatile situation was he said "shocking", he knew where to get a gun and quickly, carried it openly in a way that was reckless, irresponsible and dangerous, and he was at the scene when Sinead Connolly was shot and sustained "catastrophic" injuries.

The judge also said that Byrne helped the shooter, Dean McCarthy, to escape the scene.

He showed utter disregard for the victim and her daughter who was subject to a terrifying ordeal cowering under the table while her mother was shot.

Death, he said, was avoided by the tiniest margins.

He sentenced Joseph Byrne to 11 years in prison, with the final 18 months suspended.
