A 28-year-old man charged with aggravated burglary at the home of Tom Niland in Skreen, Co Sligo on 18 January has been refused bail.

John Irving of Shanwar, Foxford, Co Mayo appeared before Sligo District Court this afternoon where Judge Alan Mitchell heard garda evidence.

The judge refused bail on a number of grounds including the nature and degree of seriousness of the charge Mr Irving faces and the potential sentence if convicted.

He remanded the accused in custody to Harristown Court on 8 April.

Two other men also charged with aggravated burglary at the home of Mr Niland in January appeared in court via video link from Castlerea Prison.

They are John Clarke, 33, of Carrowkelly, Ballina, Co Mayo and 54-year-old Francis Harmon of Nephin Court, Killala Road, Ballina, Co Mayo.

Solicitor for John Clarke, Mark Mullaney, said his client would be applying for bail on the next remand date. Solicitor for Francis Harmon, Pat Loftus, indicated his client may also seek bail.

Judge Alan Mitchell remanded both men in custody to Sligo District Court on 7 April for DPP directions and bail applications.
