A 27-year-old man has appeared in court in Dublin charged in connection with the fatal shooting of his sister Sandra Boyd.

The mother-of-five was shot dead at the back of her parents' home at Collins Place in Finglas East at around 8.40pm on Saturday evening.

Derek Boyd, with an address at Collins Place, is accused of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

He was remanded in custody for a week.

Mr Boyd is accused of the unlawful possession of a semi-automatic pistol with a magazine, and five live rounds of ammunition at 16 Collins Place on 19 March last.

Detective Garda Damien Mangan gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He told the court that he arrested Derek Boyd at 1.30pm today, and when he was charged with the two offences he made no reply to the first, and replied no comment to the second.

Defence solicitor Morgan Shelly said there would be no application for bail today and they were not anticipating that any bail application would be made.

He said the two charges related to "a terrible accident" and a "heartbreaking tragedy".

Mr Boyd's family, he said, were in court to support him today.

Judge Paula Murphy granted Mr Boyd free legal aid and remanded him in custody to appear by videolink at Clover Hill District Court next Wednesday.
