Mark Lee, from Méile An Rí View, Balgaddy in Co Dublin, is accused of the murder of Thomas McCarthy in Croftwood Park, Ballyfermot on 27 July last year.
He was remanded in custody for a week.
Mr Lee was arrested this morning by gardaí investigating the fatal gun attack on Mr McCarthy.
The 55-year-old grandfather lived in the UK with his wife and children, but had returned to Ireland to visit relatives. He was shot at the front door of his mother's home.
Mr McCarthy was pronounced dead a short time later, despite efforts to resuscitate him.
The gunman fled and three cars were subsequently found burned out.
Detective Sergeant Ronan MacDermott told Dublin District Court today that he arrested Mr Lee at 6.19am today and he was brought to Clondalkin Garda Station where he was charged at 7.22am.
The 31-year-old made no reply to the charge of murder.
His solicitor Michael O'Connor told the court that Mr Lee had been working earning €450 a week and he was granted free legal aid.
Judge Joanne Carroll remanded Mr Lee in custody to appear again at Clover Hill District Court by video link next week.
The court was told the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed trial on indictment.
There was no application for bail because the district court cannot consider bail applications in murder cases.
Mr McCarthy had returned to his family home in Croftwood Park a week before the shooting.
He had been living in Southend-on-Sea in England, where he had raised a family.
Two other men, 25-year-old Cailean Crawford from Clifden Terrace, Ballyfermot, and 32-year-old Charles McClean of St Mark's Drive, Clondalkin, in Dublin have already been charged with the murder.
