A 43-year-old man has appeared in court in Dublin after gardaí allegedly discovered more than 250,000 images of people on his devices that were taken without consent.

Paul Boyle, with an address at Sandyford View, Blackglen Road, Dublin is charged with 23 offences including multiple counts of harassment and offensive sexual conduct.

Originally from Scotland, Mr Boyle faces 12 charges of harassment, nine charges of offensive conduct of a sexual nature and two charges of possession of child pornography - a text and video file, on dates in 2019 and 2020.

He is alleged to have taken pictures of a "personal nature" of women and children in public places.

Detective Garda Colm Grogan gave evidence of arrest charge and caution.

He told the court that when he arrested Paul Boyle at 4.47pm yesterday at his home, Mr Boyle asked: "Can we not do this tomorrow?"

He was taken to Bridewell Garda Station where the detective said he made no reply to any of the charges.

Judge Bryan Smith asked if the alleged victims were "targeted" or if the alleged offences were random.

Detective Garda Grogan replied that 12 alleged harassment victims were "specifically targeted" while the other incidents were more "opportunistic".

Gardaí objected to bail but the judge granted Mr Boyle bail on his own bond of €1,000 and an independent surety of €10,000, half of which must be cash.

He also said Mr Boyle must surrender his passport, sign on three times per week at his local garda station and not have any contact directly or indirectly, including by electronic means, with any of the alleged victims.

He also ordered him not to engage in any photography of children or members of the public and to stay away from Harcourt Street and Harcourt Road.

Mr Boyle was remanded in custody with consent to bail, to appear again at Cloverhill District Court on 18 March.
