Contempt proceedings against Facebook and Twitter over the publication of material identifying the two boys convicted of murdering schoolgirl Ana Kriégel have been adjourned until November.

The Central Criminal Court made orders last month directing the two social media companies to remove any material from their platforms that would identify the boys.

The court was told the family of one of the boys had been "forced into hiding" by material published online.

It also heard that an innocent teenager had been wrongly identified as one of the two convicted boys.

Mr Justice Michael White granted injunctions directing that the companies should remove any material identifying the boys that they become aware of or is brought to their attention.

The court was told at a previous hearing that the Director of Public Prosecutions was concerned matters could flare up again at the sentencing stage.

The sentencing hearing for the two boys has been adjourned until 29 October and Mr Justice White adjourned the contempt hearing until 22 November.

Counsel for the DPP, Brendan Grehan, said matters were continuing to be monitored and both companies had been co-operative.

Lawyers for Facebook and Twitter both said that in the acutely sensitive circumstances surrounding this case, they would not oppose the application to continue the orders in place until 22 November, when it is hoped the sentencing process will be complete.
