A 54-year-old Galway man has appeared at a special court sitting this evening, charged with the murder of Chrissie Treacy at her farm at Boula, Portumna last year.

Michael Scott, with an address at Gortrae, Portumna, appeared before a special sitting of Loughrea District Court this evening.

Detective Seargent Paul Douane gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He told Judge Gerard Furlong that he arrested Michael Scott at his home at Gortrae, Portumna this morning and took him to Loughrea Garda Station.

When he charged him with the murder, contrary to common law, of Chrissie Treacy at Derryhivney, Boula, Portumna Co Galway on 27 April 2018, the court heard that Michael Scott replied: "I did not murder Chrissie Treacy. Genuine accident."

An application for free legal aid was made by Mr Scott's solicitor John Nash, and was approved by Judge Gerard Furlong.

No bail application was made.

Mr Scott was remanded in custody and will appear again at Loughrea District court next Wednesday 5 June.
