One of two boys accused of the murder of Anastasia Kriégel told gardaí he ran away when he realised his friend was raping the schoolgirl.

The teenagers, who were both 13 at the time, deny murdering the 14-year-old girl at an abandoned house in Lucan on 14 May last year. The first accused boy denies violently sexually assaulting her.

The jury has been watching interviews carried out by gardaí with the second accused boy, Boy B, after his second arrest on suspicion of the murder of Ana Kriégel, in July last year.

Detecive Sergeant Damien Gannon and Detective Garda Donal Daly told the boy they had new information and new evidence and all the questions they would be asking him were relevant to that new information.

They asked him to give them more details on what happened at the abandoned Glenwood House near St Catherine's Park in Lucan on 14 May last year.

Boy B described how he had gone to the house with Ana and his friend, Boy A, but that he had gone into the house alone, first.

While he was in there he said he found a white stick and picked it up to see how heavy it was. He said he had a stick collection but this one was a bit too heavy and too clunky so he put it down.

He was shown a photograph of a stick which was found near Ana's body, and stained with her blood, but he told gardaí it was definitely not the same one.

He said he did not recall ever seeing the stick in the photo before. He said he might have seen it when he looked into the room where Ana's body was later found, as there were a lot of sticks in there, but he did not recall. He said he did not know anything about the stick in the photograph.

He described to gardaí that Boy A and Ana were talking outside the house and he said Ana appeared happy to him.

Boy A and Ana then went into the abandoned house and he followed. Boy A asked him to leave but he said he mumbled and decided not to leave.

He said Boy A had a blank look on his face and did not look sad or happy. Boy B told gardaí he did not really want to leave the house.

He thought something would be happening in terms of Boy A and Ana. He said he thought Boy A was going to kiss Ana and she was going to kiss Boy A and they were going to "ask each other out or something".

Boy B went to another room but he heard "shuffling" from the room Boy A and Ana had gone to, so he went over to see what was happening. When he saw the others, he said at first it looked like Boy A was "hugging Ana or something", then he spun her over onto the ground. He said he didn't see their faces  - both were struggling.

Boy B said his friend started choking Ana and while he was doing that he started taking off her clothes. Boy B said Boy A looked at him when he was about to take off Ana's bra. He said he saw Boy A's face and it was "blank", explaining that there were "no emotions". He told the gardaí he realised that Boy A was raping Ana and he had to run.

Boy B said Ana kept begging "no please don't do this, no please". He said Ana was "begging and crying" asking Boy A to stop and not to hurt her.

Boy B said the only time he himself touched Ana was when he gave her his hand earlier as they were crossing a ditch on their way to the house.

He said he had no other contact with her and she did not say anything directly to him as she was lying on the floor. He said he did not see her with any injuries.

The jury will continue watching the interviews tomorrow.

Earlier, Mr Justice Paul McDermott told the jurors that in light of the nature of the trial and the fact that two children were involved, he had taken a decision to shorten the hours the court would be sitting each day.

He said this would be reviewed again next Tuesday. He warned the jurors that this could mean the case could last beyond the six weeks initially anticipated.
