The jury in the trial of a 50-year-old farmer, charged with murdering his alleged love rival and hiding his body in an underground tank, will continue deliberating on Monday.

Patrick Quirke from Breanshamore, Co Tipperary, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Bobby Ryan, a part-time DJ known as Mr Moonlight.

Mr Ryan went missing on 3 June, 2011, after leaving his girlfriend Mary Lowry's home at Fawnagowan at about 6.30am. Twenty-two months later, his body was found in an underground run-off tank on the farm owned by Ms Lowry and leased by the accused.

The prosecution claims that Mr Quirke murdered Mr Ryan so he could rekindle an affair with Ms Lowry. They say he had the motive and the opportunity. The defence has said the case is based on a theory rather than any hard evidence and has urged the jury to acquit.

The jury has been deliberating for more than 11 hours since Tuesday afternoon.
