A 55-year-old man has appeared in court charged in connection with a drugs seizure estimated to be worth €1.8 million at Dublin Port at the weekend.

Alvydus Simkus from Smiths Lane, Cathedral Place in Limerick, who is originally from Lithuania, was brought before a special sitting of the Dublin District Court this afternoon.

Gardaí say drugs estimated to be worth about €1.8 million were seized at Dublin Port on Saturday.

It was part of a joint operation by the Revenue Customs Service and the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau.

This afternoon, Alvydus Simkus was brought before the court on six charges including possession of MDMA, Ketamine and cocaine as well as possession with intent to sell or supply at Dublin Port on 31 March.

Detective Garda Ronan Doolan gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

The court was told that when the charges were put to Mr Simkus he made no reply after each charge.

An application was made for bail. However, this was objected to due to the serious nature of the charges and because he might pose a possible flight risk.

Judge Alan Mitchell denied bail.

He remanded the accused in custody to Cloverhill to appear again on 6 April.

He was also granted legal aid.
