The trial of a 25-year-old man for the murder of David Byrne at the Regency Hotel two years ago has been adjourned for three months to allow the investigation into the death of the senior investigating officer to proceed.

Detective Superintendent Colm Fox was found dead at Ballymun Garda Station last month.

The prosecution claims that Patrick Hutch, from Champions Avenue in Dublin, was the man dressed as a woman carrying a gun on the day David Byrne was shot dead at the Regency Hotel in Dublin on 5 February 2016.

He denies charges of murder and related firearms offences.

Senior Counsel Sean Gillane told the Special Criminal Court that separate teams had been established to examine different strands of the case.

This included the examination of documents and taking statements from witnesses.

Defence counsel Michael O'Higgins agreed to the application, saying "who knows what the next move is."

However, he also referred to a potential issue where it may in future be unsafe to proceed in a case where the credibility of witnesses is "a live issue" and the passing of time may "dull the memory."

Mr Justice Tony Hunt today remanded Mr Hutch in custody and adjourned the case until 9 July.
