A boxer who was sent home from the Olympic Games last year after testing positive for a banned substance has been given a five-month jail sentence for criminal damage.

Michael O'Reilly, 24, was given the sentence for causing criminal damage to a relative's caravan at Littleton in Co Tipperary on 18 April 2016.

His father, Michael O'Reilly Senior, has been given a three-month jail term for causing criminal damage to two cars on the same night.

The charges arise from their part in a fight which broke out in the locality on the night that his younger brother James O'Reilly got engaged.

Gardaí had asked both men to leave the area, but Michael O'Reilly was charged with damaging a caravan belonging to the Doyle family, relatives of his, by throwing rocks at it.

Michael O’Reilly Senior admitted damaging two cars parked nearby.

Judge Elizabeth McGrath had adjourned the case last June so the parties could agree on the amount of compensation to be paid.

She said the level of compensation brought to court, the sum of €250, was totally unacceptable given the level of damage caused was more than €2,000.

She imposed a five-month sentence on Michael O'Reilly, who had 37 previous convictions, and a three-month sentence on his father.

Both have appealed the sentences on the payment of a bond of €500 and walked from the court.

A bench warrant was issued for the arrest of Bernard O'Reilly, another brother, who also faced criminal damage charges and did not turn up in court.

19-year-old James O'Reilly was given one year’s probation.
