'Santy-bodies' keeping Mr Claus safe from Covid

For anyone worried that Santa Claus might be grounded this Christmas Eve due to the pandemic, it looks like he is actually immune to Covid-19 due to his 'santy-bodies'.

A professor of Comparative Immunology at Trinity College Dublin believes Santa could be one of a rare group of people who are resistant to viral infection.

Professor Cliona O'Farrelly said some some people who get exposed to viruses do not get infected and
experts are convinced that Santa has 'santy-bodies' and a special immune system.

She added that Santa has his helpers on the outside (the elves) and experts are sure he has particularly effective T-cells ( working inside his body) keeping him safe.

Prof O'Farrelly said while there are some concerns about Santa's weight, "we think that Santa is one of these portly people who has a really healthy immune system."

And although he is a very private person for most of the year, she said she feels sure he has had his Covid vaccinations, because he is so meticulous.

Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Philip Boucher-Hayes, Prof O'Farrelly also said she is sure the elves have made sure Mr Claus was covered for his vaccinations.

She said that she wrote to the Chief Medical Officer yesterday and Dr Tony Holohan has exempted Santa from all Covid restrictions - including filling out a passenger locator form and wearing a mask.

"Thanks be to heavens. He has enough to do," she said.

And because Santa moves at such a pace through houses he is not at risk and his fantastic immune system will protect him even if he is entering a house where people have Covid-19 - so even people who are isolating over Christmas will still get their presents.

However, Prof O'Farrelly said it was important for everyone else to keep to the Covid rules because while Santa is special, the rest of us may be susceptible to Covid-19.

Santa's reindeer also have complex immune systems and it would seem that the "efficiency of their immune system correlates with the complexity of their antlers."

This means that because Santa's reindeer have big and intricate antlers, they will have very strong immune systems, she explained.
