Latest figures show that 1,842 tests for Covid-19 were carried out in 108 schools in the seven days from 7-13 March.

According to the Health Service Executive report, the number of detected cases of the virus in that period across all schools was 44, representing a positivity rate of 2.4%.

The figure is higher than the previous week, when 529 tests were carried out with six cases detected for a positivity rate of 1.1%.

Tests were conducted at 65 primary, 37 post-primary and six special education schools last week.

According to the report, 62 cases were detected in childcare facilities in the same period, representing a positivity rate of 11.3%.

In total, it says, 551 tests were conducted across 35 childcare facilities.

This represents an increase on the previous week, when 488 tests were carried out on 37 facilities, with 43 cases detected, representing a positivity rate of 8.8%.

The report says there were 888 confirmed cases in children aged 0-19 in week 10.

There were 220 confirmed cases in the 0-4 age group representing 0.1% of that age group.

The report says there were 352 confirmed cases in the 5-12 age group.

It also shows there were 316 confirmed cases in the 13-18 age group.

It says the figures represent 0.07% of those aged 5-18.

The report also details the results of close contact testing undertaken in educational and childcare facilities.

It follows notification to departments of public health of a confirmed case of Covid-19 who had attended a facility during the infectious time period.

The figures show that 2,625 tests were completed on a total of 118 schools since the phased reopening on 8 February and 13 March.

These include 65 primary, 40 post primary, and 13 special education schools.

The number of cases detected across all schools was 61, which represents a total of 2.3%.

There were 2,560 tests carried out where Covid-19 was not detected.

The report says it details resulted data only, where the virus is detected or not detected, and does not include tests that are pending/invalid, which accounts for the differences in the overall totals.

The figures also show that 4,531 tests were carried out in 254 childcare facilities from 4 January to 13 March.

The number of positive cases detected was 486, or 10.7%.

There were 4,038 tests where Covid-19 was not detected.
