Covid-19: 68 additional deaths, 556 new cases

The Department of Health has been notified of 68 further deaths and an additional 556 cases of Covid-19.

Fifty of these deaths occurred in February, 15 in January and two in December.

The median age of those who died was 85 and the age range was 43-96 years.

In total there has been 3,752 Covid-19 related deaths in Ireland.

The number of people with coronavirus being treated in intensive care units is 182, up six on yesterday.

There are 1,104 Covid-19 patients in hospitals. There were 54 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

Today's new cases bring the total number of confirmed cases here to 204,940.

Of the 556 cases notified today, 284 are men and 268 are women.

The median age is 39 years old, while 60% are under the age of 45.

163 in Dublin, 45 in Limerick, 38 in Galway, 34 in Cork, 29 in Waterford and the remaining 247 cases are spread across 20 other counties. Leitrim was the only county which did not report a new case.

The national 14-day incidence rate per 100,000 people has fallen to 319.0, down from 326.9 yesterday.

Monaghan has the highest rate of any county at 651.6, followed by Carlow at 451.4. The lowest rate is found in Roscommon (131.7), with the second lowest rate in Kerry (140.8).

Meanwhile, latest figures show there were 236,996 doses of Covid-19 vaccine administered up to Saturday 6 February.

84,344 people have received two doses of the vaccine, while a further 68,308 people have received one dose and are awaiting a second dose.

There have been ten Covid-related deaths reported by the Department of Health in Northern Ireland, and 275 new cases.

345,195 Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in Northern Ireland.

Around 22% of adults in Northern Ireland have received a first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine.

Earlier, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said that legislation on quarantine hotels in Ireland would be published next week.

He said he did not want to see Ireland acting as a back door to another country.

Speaking at a press conference where he announced new supports for businesses, Mr Varadkar also said the Government was working on a revised version of the "Living with Covid-19" plan.

He said it had not yet been determined what parts of the economy would reopen.

The revised plan will be announced in the week of 22 February.
