The director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory has said the suspension of Covid-19 testing there this weekend due to staffing issues has not impacted overall testing capacity.
Speaking on RTÉ's This Week, Dr Cillian De Gascun said the suspension of testing at the NVRL did not play a part in the lower number of cases seen in recent days.
Dr De Gascun said they will be "back to normal" in terms of testing at the NVRL from Tuesday.
Earlier Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said progress is being made in terms of suppressing Covid-19 in Ireland, but while the country is "on the right track", it is still too early for people to ease their efforts.
Dr Holohan said the incidence of the virus was decreasing in younger people, however it was continuing to rise in those over the age of 75.
"We have more to do but we are on the right track," he said.
Dr Holohan noted too that Ireland is currently one of only four countries in the EU with a reduction in its 7-day incidence, and said that national our reproductive number has reduced to about 1.
Meanwhile the Chief Executive of the HSE has warned the public about becoming complacent in light of the reduced number of Covid-19 cases in recent days.
Paul Reid told RTÉ News that it was still early day sand he wanted to urge a lot of caution.
