No further coronavirus-related deaths have been recorded in Northern Ireland in the last 24-hour period - ‪for the second consecutive day.

The official Department of Health death toll in the North remains at 537‬.

There are six new cases of Covid-19, taking the number of confirmed cases to 4,802.

Northern Ireland's Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill said the Executive is still considering its policy around face coverings.

"Previously when we have sought medical advice in terms of face coverings and the merit or not of them, we have been told that 'yes, OK, they're helpful, they can give people some reassurance in terms of moving around, however we need to watch that people don't lapse into a false sense of security'," she said.

"We have that still under review and certainly we'll be coming back to that discussion again later in the week."

First Minister Arlene Foster added: "We have, as an Executive, recommended that people should wear face coverings on public transport or indeed in shops, but there is a body of evidence that says actually when people are wearing face coverings they think they don't have to take the other hygiene regimes as seriously, and that's not the case, and it does concern me when I see people wearing face masks but they are not socially distancing, and that's wrong.

"You have to continue to be involved in social distancing even when you are wearing a face mask because the face mask doesn't protect you, it only protects others from you breathing upon them.

"We will have that discussion around face masks again on Thursday when we have more advice from our advisers."

The new figures come as a series of lockdown easements apply across Northern Ireland from today.

They include allowing those who are shielding to spend time outside with a person from another household, with social distancing observed.

Marriage and civil partnership ceremonies may take place outdoors with no more than 10 people in attendance, while the needs or welfare of animals can be tended to.

The reopening of outdoor sports facilities, as well as outdoor retailers such as car showrooms and agricultural machinery, are also allowed from today.

Meanwhile, dental surgeries are permitted to open for face-to-face urgent dental care in the first part of a three-stage reopening process.

This afternoon, Northern Ireland's Economy Minister Diane Dodds announced that small retailers will be allowed to re-open for business from Friday, bringing the region in line with the Irish Government's position.

Britain recorded a total of 55 Covid related deaths in the last 24 hours which is the lowest total since 22 March.

Despite the downward trend, Britain has now recorded 40,597 deaths of those testing positive for coronavirus.
