A 73-year-old former marathon runner says he has been given "a new life" after recovering from coronavirus.
After spending four weeks in hospital, Alan Jordan surprised his wife and son last week by coming home earlier than expected.
Mr Jordan, from Tallaght, thanked the staff of Tallaght University Hospital for all their help and care.
His wife, Marie Jordan, said she was so worried when he became seriously ill and described the whole experience as frightening.
Mr Jordan tested positive for Covid-19 when his wife brought him to hospital. He was then put on an oxygen mask and antibiotics to help clear his pneumonia.
After weeks of drugs and treatment, staff lined the corridors and applauded when the former marathon runner became well enough to finally leave his room.
Mr Jordan said it was an emotional moment, and that the staff placed tape across the corridor which was like his "marathon finish line".
He ran - though not very fast - and broke the tape before going back and thanking every one of them for what they had done, he explained.
Mr Jordan also thanked those who sent him messages of support including Republic of Ireland manager, Stephen Kenny, and GAA star Alan Brogan.
The family say they are very thankful for the work of all the doctors, nurses and staff at Tallaght University Hospital.
Ms Jordan said they cannot believe they have got their lives back and Alan has got his life back.
"Thanks" is not enough of a word for the appreciation they have for the hospital and the staff, his wife added.
Mr Jordan explained that he is now feeling a lot better and is very grateful. He said that one of the nurses who treated him said he had been given a new life.
