A man whose family were told he had only 24 hours to live after becoming seriously ill following complications associated with Covid-19 has told RTÉ's Liveline programme that he made a miraculous recovery.

Mark Burke, who is 49, was told he was a "medical miracle" after his bowel "rejuvenated" after complications.

The father of four contracted Covid-19 and spent four weeks in ICU at St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin.

He had double pneumonia in his lungs due to coronavirus, but when his "bowel went into failure" his family was informed that he had 24 hours to live.

"I have no recollection of anything until I came out of ICU. By all accounts what they did for me in ICU was above and beyond the call. We're walking around everyday amongst angels and we don't know it, Joe. They're special people."

Staff at St Vincent's asked Mark could they release his medical records for global research purposes.

"My bowel fully rejuvenated. They say it's never happened before and that's why my medical records are so valuable. No one understands it."

His wife Joanne said she and her family are "overjoyed with the outcome and are thrilled to have him home".

She said she and her family were meticulous with their hygiene and Mark had been self isolating after he started to experience symptoms of Covid-19.

She said doctors believe that her family's hygiene standards are the reason why none of the rest of the family contracted it.
