Over €60m has been allocated for roads funding and projects across Galway city and county.

This includes funding for key projects such as the Galway City Bypass which had the biggest allocation of €4.5m under the New Roads programme.

Funded projects for 2026 include €2.5m for the safety scheme on the R332 in Kilbannon in north Galway.

The Kilbannon project includes road widening and realignment from Kilbannon village to the GAA club and a pedestrian/cycleway linking to the local St Benin's National School.

The work being carried out along the Tuam to Ballinrobe road aims to rectify issues caused by a threefold increase in traffic on the R332 route since the Tuam bypass opened.

Minister of State with Responsibility for Road Transport Seán Canney said the decision marks a major milestone for a project that local people have waited a long time to be delivered.

He said: "The realignment and the new walking and cycling link between the school, the village and the GAA club will make a real difference for families and the wider community.

"It also reflects the Government's ongoing commitment to improving rural roads and active travel infrastructure across Galway."

The final sections of the Athenry relief road have been allocated €2m under the Strategic Regional and Local programme.

This major infrastructural project began last year and includes a roundabout, cycleways and footpaths.

The aim is to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion in the town centre and improve access to residential and school areas.

In Mayo, €69m funding has been announced for national, regional and local Mayo roads including some key improvement grants and bridge rehabilitation.

The national roads allocation of €28.15 supports a programme of upgrades, safety schemes, pavement improvements and junction works across the county.

The N17 will receive a number of safety and junction upgrades including improvements at Claremorris to Knock. There will also be funding for regional and local improvements such as the Kilkelly relief road.

Minister for Rural and Community Development Dara Calleary said: "I am delighted to welcome significant investment in our regional and national roads here in Mayo.

"This funding will make a real difference in communities right across the county allowing safer roads and more efficient journeys."
