A 46-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death of a man in his 30s who sustained serious injuries following an alleged assault in Co Roscommon on New Year's Day.

Yevhen Shutko, with an address in the county, was brought before Roscommon District Court this morning.

He is charged with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Jordon Nevin, in Ballaghaderreen, on 1 January.

Mr Nevin sustained critical injuries following an incident on Barrack Street, which happened in the early hours of New Year's Day.

He was subsequently transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where he died yesterday evening.

During a brief special sitting of Roscommon District Court this morning, Detective Garda Brendan McGrath told Judge James Faughnan that Yevhen Shutko had been charged under Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Persons Act, 1997.

The judge was told further charges may be brought against the accused in due course.

A bail application, by defending solicitor Bríd Miller, was refused, given the seriousness of the charges.

Judge Faughnan remanded Mr Shutko in custody to appear before a sitting of Ballaghaderreen District Court next Friday, 9 January.
