Kenny's Bookshop and Art Gallery in Galway city is celebrating 85 years as a family business this weekend.
Founded in 1940 by Des and Maureen, Kenny's now employs over 30 people.
Five of their six children worked in the business for decades, and many of the third generation have worked there as well over the years.
What began as a small, second-hand bookshop in Galway's High Street, Kenny's has grown to include an art gallery, retail bookshop, libraries division, archives department, book bindery and its biggest department - online book sales.
It now ships hundreds of thousands of books around Ireland and overseas annually, with the US, Canada and Australia among its biggest markets.
Tom Kenny, who has worked in the business all his life, said: "My parents brought us up with a rich legacy in the form of a love of books and the visual arts.
"So, it was no surprise that five of their children drifted into the business. Each worked their way up and found their own niche, and in the same way, the third generation have done the same. They have shown loyalty and commitment and happily there has been a smooth transition of leadership."
Tomás Kenny is a member of the third generation of Kenny's working in the business.
"The book trade is frequently looked at as old fashioned, but in fact I've had the opposite experience. We have constantly been at the cutting edge, looking for new markets, new software, and new ways of selling books.
"Every day is completely different to the day before, and it remains huge amounts of fun, which is such a great thing to be able to say about work and family."
The bookstore has welcomed thousands of Irish writers, artists and publishers over the years.
They include Joseph O'Connor, Mary O'Malley, Donal Ryan, Seamus Heaney, John McGahern, Maeve Binchy, John Behan, Edna O'Brien, Roddy Doyle, Anne Enright, Sebastian Barry, Jennifer Johnston, Manus Walsh, Thelma Mansfield and Claire Keegan.
The business now operates out of Liosbán Retail Park on the Tuam Road.
