A Galway-based technology company is to create 125 jobs as part of a significant expansion of its operations in the city.
The Mbryonics firm is opening a new manufacturing facility, with roles in engineering, production, sales and marketing.
The positions will be filled over the next two years.
The company, which was founded in 2014, already employs 100 people in the city.
It is working to develop photonic satellite optical communications networks.
In time, it is expected that these technologies will be used to provide internet connections, in a more cost effective and reliable manner than is possible with existing links.
Mbryonics has developed satellite technologies that facilitate the transfer of data via laser.
This allows for an increase in the volume of data that can be transmitted and also means that such information can be accessed on any part of the planet.
The jobs announcement follows extensive collaboration between the company and the European Space Agency in recent years.
The expansion marks the latest stage in a transition from the development and testing of new products to high volume manufacturing.
The new facility, in the Dangan area of Galway, will make Mbryonic’s flagship product, StarCom, and is enabled to produce 500 units per year.
The company has plans for further expansion and said that it has secured a site in Shannon for a second manufacturing plant, which will have capacity to deliver more than 5,000 units annually.
