People have been told not to swim off two beaches in Co Mayo after heavy rainfall.

There is a do not swim notice for Mulranny and an advisory not to swim at Golden Strand in Acaill.

Mayo County Council said the warnings were issued after testing of the water was conducted and further tests are being carried out.

In a statement, the council said that, after heavy rainfall, increased surface water run-off and storm water overflows can increase the risk of pollutants in all bathing areas.

It said that people should avoid recreational water activities, including swimming and paddling, for two days after a period of heavy rain.
