A primary school in Galway city has buzzed away the competition to be crowned national Golden Bee Champion in the 2025 Pollinator Project competition.

St Patrick's Primary School won for their project 'Bee-yond the Bricks', which focused on supporting pollinators in an urban environment.

The prestigious award recognises the school's outstanding work in supporting pollinators and biodiversity.

Over 84,000 students participated in the nationwide competition.

St Pat's is a vibrant, multi-cultural national school in the heart of Galway city.

The school has developed a garden in recent years

As part of the project, the pupils, along with their teacher Jarlath Conboy, created over 30 bee nesting sites and installed hydration stations at their school.

Mr Conboy said almost every child was involved in the winning project.

"We're a mixed primary school with 231 pupils. Our school has a strong focus on nurturing a holistic environment with an emphasis on student well-being.

"We have cultivated a city garden to the rear of our school over many years and painted brightly coloured seating for our pupils and staff to enjoy this little piece of nature. Our winning project showed how even in the most urban locations you can make a difference," he said.

The Pollinator Project competition is a partnership with Biodiversity in Schools and fibre broadband operator SIRO.

This year thousands of students across Ireland benefitted from special kits delivered to schools and became pollinator ambassadors assisting in bee-positive actions.
