The woman and man who died in a house fire in Conamara, Co Galway, this morning have been named as Sonia 'Sunny' Jacobs - a 77-year-old originally from New York - and Kevin Kelly, from Co Galway, who was in his early 30s.

Ms Jacobs moved to Ireland in the late 1990s.

She spent 17 years in prison in the US, a number of them on death row, following a conviction for murder.

Her sentence and imprisonment were subsequently found to be wrongful and she was released from custody.

Following her arrival here, she married Peter Pringle, who himself served 15 years in jail for the murder of two gardaí, before his conviction was found to be unsafe and quashed in 1995.

Mr Pringle died two years ago.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire at the property near Casla shortly after 6am.

Ms Jacobs and Mr Kelly were the only people in the house at the time the blaze broke out.

The detached bungalow is located in the townland of Gleann Mhac Muirinn, around 9km from Casla.

Three units of the County Galway Fire Service were dispatched to the scene, with personnel from Galway City and An Cheathrú Rua involved in bringing the situation under control.

A technical examination of the bungalow will be carried out in an effort to determine the cause of the blaze.
