Galway City Council has said it is prepared to give a free, long-term lease on a former cinema, which cost over €8 million to build.

The Pálás cinema closed in February, after the operators cited mounting financial losses.

The three-screen facility is owned by the council.

It is now seeking expressions of interest from parties who wish to avail of the infrastructure.

The local authority said it will provide the property, without charge, on a long-term lease to one operator.

While a feasibility study commissioned by the council came up with a number of possible uses for the building, the only stipulation for its future use is that it is operated "in a manner compatible with the city's international reputation for culture and the arts".

Interested parties are being asked to give an overview of their plans and have a "robust business case".

Pending the applications meeting several criteria, the council hopes to be in a position to make a final decision on the future occupants of the building in September.
