There has been some progress being made in the restoration of power and water in the west of the country, following Storm Éowyn.

The Luimnagh water treatment plant on the east of Galway city is reported to be up and running again, which is good news for households in areas including Oranmore, Clarinbridge and Claregalway.

But there are thousands more homeowners and businesses still badly affected around the county with the PowerCheck website showing 5 February as still the estimated restoration date.

Conamara is still struggling badly with ESB Galway area manager Matthew Cunningham saying that more remote areas will be slower to get to and may be moved out into next week.

Places like Leitir Mealláin and Leitir Móir and parts of Clifden are still badly affected.

However Carna, with a population of around 1,500, had power restored last night.

Minister for Social Protection Dara Calleary will visit a local resident whose house was severely damaged during the storm.

He will travel first to Inis Mór and An Cheatharú Rua

There are generators being used in many parts of Conamara to aid water supply and the Irish Coast Guard brought a generator by helicopter to Inis Meain yesterday.

But there are reports that Inis Oírr is experiencing further power outages this morning.
