Family members of Liam Farrell, an elderly Co Leitrim farmer who was found dead in suspicious circumstances, have issued an appeal for information on the fifth anniversary his death.

The 87-year-old lived alone in Rooskey and was found by his daughter slumped on his back at the back door of his home on Sunday 13 January 2020.

He was covered in blood, his shoes and socks were removed and his watch was broken.

Mr Farrell also had bruising to his left eye and his feet. His family believe he may have been attacked.

The inquest held into the death of the farmer last September returned an open verdict.

A garda investigation was carried out into the circumstances of Mr Farrell's death.

A file was submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. No prosecution was directed.

Following last September’s inquest, the Garda Commissioner instructed a peer review of the original investigation.

The senior investigating officer carrying out the peer-review met with the Farrell family in December.

It is understood Commissioner Drew Harris has requested that the family await the outcome of the review in advance of any meeting with him.

Mr Farrell’s son Brendan says they are "looking forward to the meeting with Commissioner Drew Harris when the peer review is complete".

The night before Mr Farrell was found dead, he went to two pubs in his local village as was his usual routine and walked home.

His son is asking people who were in Rooskey on the night of Saturday 12 January or in the early hours of Sunday 13 January and who saw anything unusual that may help them to come forward.

He said "it’s been very difficult over the past five years" while recounting the way they found their father’s body.

The Farrell family unveiled a memorial plaque in memory of their father after his anniversary mass.

The plaque includes a picture of Mr Farrell with his dog and a public appeal for information with the Garda Confidential number.
