RTÉ's Europe Editor Tony Connelly has been conferred with an Honorary Doctorate at a ceremony at the University of Galway.
He was among ten people being recognised for their contribution to Irish life, over the course of this week’s winter graduations at the university.
Broadcasters Keith Finnegan and Éanna Ní Lamhna, musician Dolores Keane and trade unionist Owen Reidy also honoured.
Mr Connelly was awarded a Doctor of Literature, for his contribution to journalism and public discourse.
Born in Derry, he attended school at St Columb’s College, before graduating from Trinity College and the London School of Journalism.
He has reported on EU and European Affairs from RTÉ’s Brussels bureau for more than 20 years.
His work has taken him around the continent and further afield, covering conflicts in the Middle East, Africa, the Caucuses and the Balkans. More recently he has reported extensively on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Mr Connelly also provided extensive coverage of Britain’s decision to leave the EU.
Speaking ahead of the ceremony he said he was honoured to accept the award from the University of Galway.
He described it as a recognition of the work carried out by journalists, in ensuring accuracy and balance in a changing world, as well as an acknowledgement of the work undertaken by RTÉ.
