A new block to accommodate patients at Portiuncula University Hospital is to open next month.
The 50-bed unit does not add to existing capacity at the Co Galway facility but replaces two outdated wards at the main hospital building.
It has been developed at a site to the rear of the existing property and comprises single rooms, each with ensuite facilities.
The two-storey structure houses the Orchard and Garbally wards and has been built at a cost of €35 million.
It is hoped the new facilities will reduce exposure to infection, reduce length of stay and improve the overall patient experience for those admitted to the hospital in Ballinasloe.
The wards will start to accommodate patients on a phased basis from mid-October.
The new block was officially opened by the Taoiseach this morning.
