An inquest into the deaths of a mother and daughter in a road crash in Co Mayo last month has been told that a section of the N26 was "not fit for modern traffic".

The comments were made by Coroner Patrick O'Connor at the opening of the inquest into the deaths of 46-year-old Aisling Moore and her eight-year-old daughter Abbigael Tournie Moore.

They were killed in July when their car was in a collision with a lorry on the N26 at Callow, between Foxford and Swinford.

Mr O'Connor said he knew that family members shared his concerns about the safety of the stretch of road where their loved ones died.

"The local authority and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) will have to do something about the stretch of road," he continued.

Aisling Moore's father Eamon and her sister Anita attended the brief hearing.

A pathologist gave evidence that the medical cause of death in Aisling's case was extensive fatal injuries including multiple fractures and head injuries.

The medical cause of Abbigael’s death was extensive head injuries.

Mr O'Connor told the family he was opening the inquest so that a State death certificate could be issued.

He said it would take some time before a full inquiry is carried out.

He then adjourned the substantive inquest hearing pending the completion of what he called a "thorough" garda investigation.
