A former railway station in Co Leitrim has been repurposed as a community centre following a regeneration project.

The project cost around €2.4m and "The Junction" in Ballinamore is now a base for three different organisations offering youth, art and remote working services.

The railway station opened on the site in 1887 as a junction of the Cavan to Leitrim line but the line closed in 1959.

The building was used to house St Felim's secondary school from 1962 to 2014.

The diocese of Kilmore donated the site and station buildings to Leitrim County Council and it was taken on to restore and repurpose the building to provide space for initiatives which would benefit the community.

It was officially opened by Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys

Money was sourced from the Rural Regeneration Development fund and it is now home to North Connaught Youth and Community Services, Leitrim School of Art and the Leitrim Enterprise fund's remote working space hub.

Officially opened by Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys today, she said this is a really important project for Ballinamore and the surrounding areas "particularly because it brings a derelict and vacant building back into community use".

Ms Humphreys said that the restoration of two protected buildings and a derelict site "preserves local heritage assets for future generations to enjoy and improves the public realm space in Ballinamore".

She said: "It provides opportunities for employment, digital technology, arts, culture and youth services.

"The Junction is fully operational with the hosting of youth services by the North Connaught Youth and Community Services, by the provision of arts programmes by the Leitrim School of Art and in the Junction hub, flexible hot desking and office space for enterprises."

Cathaoirleach of the council Councillor Justin Warnock stated that the Junction is a great example of the council and the community working together to develop a project that brings real community benefit.
