Visiting restrictions have been put in place at Roscommon University Hospital due to a Covid-19 outbreak on two wards.

Members of the public have been asked not to visit people in the hospital if they are feeling unwell or have respiratory symptoms.

Visitation to St Coman's Ward and St Teresa's Ward will be facilitated on compassionate grounds, on an exceptional basis only, the hospital said in a statement.

"We appreciate that restricting visiting at this time of year is difficult for patients and their families. However, this is a necessary measure to ensure the hospital can continue to keep all our patients safe," Interim Hospital Manager Marie Doorly said.

"Everyone coming to the hospital should follow public health guidance and use hand gel regularly during their visit, remember your cough etiquette and if needed, masks are available for use throughout the hospital."

She added that to arrange a visit on compassionate grounds, the ward manager should be contacted in advance.

Similar restrictions were announced at Portiuncula University Hospital in Ballinalsoe, Co Galway yesterday.
