Gardaí were called to a business premises in Co Mayo last night after a man barricaded himself into the building armed with a knife.

Two staff members, who had been in the building in Ballina, fled when the man entered.

Gardaí were called to the scene in the Market Square area of the town at around 6pm yesterday.

Local officers were assisted by members of the Armed Support Unit during the operation.

The incident came to an end at around 11pm, when the man emerged from the building.

No shots were fired and there are no reports of any injuries.

The man, who is in his mid 30s, was arrested at the scene and brought to Ballina Garda Station where he remains in custody.
