Man dies after getting out of his car on M6 in Galway

A man in his 50s died after a road crash near Athenry, Co Galway early this morning.

The man had got out of his car following a single-vehicle crash and was then struck by a lorry.

The crash happened at Ballygarraun West, Athenry at around 5am.

The body of the man was removed from the scene to University Hospital Galway.

The lorry driver, who is also in his 50s, was not injured.

A technical examination of the scene is under way and the road remains closed with local diversions in place.
