Fire service personnel from Galway spent several hours last night bringing a wildfire on the outskirts of the city under control.

The blaze broke out close to the Rahoon Road at around 5pm yesterday.

It spread through an area near the Boleybeg townland, with plumes of smoke visible from the nearby suburb of Knocknacarra.

Firefighters from Galway city and Athenry were tasked to the scene, supported by colleagues from An Cheathrú Rua, who used drones to assess the trajectory and extent of the fire.

They managed to contain the fire and limit its spread, ensuring it did not threaten any nearby properties.

A section of the Rahoon Road was closed to traffic until late last night, to allow emergency service vehicles access the scene and extinguish the fire.

Gardaí monitored the area through the night.

This morning, some smouldering embers on the affected lands are still generating smoke, but the volume and extent of this has diminished significantly since last evening.

All roads in the area have reopened to traffic.
