An investigation is under way into the death of a woman whose body was found in what gardaí said were unexplained circumstances in Sligo.

The discovery was made in a house in St John's Terrace in the town shortly after 8.30pm last night.

The body remains at the scene, which is preserved for a technical examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.

The office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

Gardaí said the results of the post-mortem will determine the course of their investigation.
