Funeral for teenage girl killed in Galway road crash

The funeral has taken place in Co Galway of one of two teenagers who died in a road crash outside Headford earlier this week.

The mass for Kirsty Bohan, from Ballyfruit near the town, was held at the Church of St Patrick and Cuana followed by burial in Donaghpatrick Cemetery in Headford.

The 14-year-old was the youngest of three siblings, and had two older sisters.

The church altar was covered in flowers, including displays made up of the words 'daughter and sister' from her parents, Christy and Teresa, and her sisters, Martha and Ava.

Chief celebrant Fr Dixie Faber said they believed that all the ties of friendship and affection travel with us in death, they are confident that God remembers all the good that Kirsty did in life, and he has now called her to himself.

Symbols of her young life were brought to the altar by her friends - her make-up bag and perfume to show her love of fashion and beauty, a tractor and truck because of her interest in her family's farming traditions, her hurley to show her camogie and sporting life which she loved, one of her paintings to display her talent as art and woodwork were her favourite subjects at school, and her headphones because of love of music.

The mass also heard how her parents wanted to thank the thousands of people across the country who had offered support and sympathy at this horrific time, including statements from national leaders, her school and sports clubs.

In his homily, Fr Faber said that with the sudden death of a loved one, the light goes out of our life, one moment the sun is shining, and then without the slightest warning we are plunged into darkness, and in the space of a moment our whole lives are turned upside down.

"Life is a gift and a treasure ... but is also so fragile."

Kirsty Bohan and Lucas Joyce died in the crash

Fr Faber said that Kirsty loved life, was very creative and loved art.

She also had many friends and made friends easily and they brought her much joy. She was just about to spread her wings among her community and the world, he added.

Fr Faber asked them not to be overwhelmed and to remember the joy they brought to her life as she did to theirs.

Kirsty was a student at Presentation College in Headford.

Her fellow student Lucas Joyce, 14, also died in the crash.

His funeral takes place tomorrow at 12pm at St Brendan's Church in Annagdown and he will be buried in the local cemetery.

Two teenagers who survived the crash on Monday - a 13-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl - are being treated in hospital for their injuries.
