ESB Networks crews have completed repair work on a transformer in the city after it tripped this morning, causing widespread disruption.

Power supplies to over 7,500 homes and business were disrupted as a result of the outage.

The fault had knock on consequences for traffic around the city, with signal lights at a number of key junctions out of order for much of the day.

This led to widespread congestion around Galway for several hours.

Power was restored to the affected areas shortly after 5pm.

Thousands of homes and businesses on the east side of the city were without power, and the issue arose after a transformer tripped at a sub-station in the Ballybane area earlier today.

Crews were working since this morning to restore supply and ESB Networks said a total of 7,598 customers are impacted by the outage in the Ballybane area.

There were tailbacks on most approaches to the city and the Citylink bus company said its 1.30pm service to Cork was delayed by 30 minutes as a result of the heavy traffic this afternoon, which had an impact on pick ups in Limerick.

Galway City Council said earlier that motorists heading north for the bank holiday weekend should leave the city via the Dublin Rd and the M6/M17 motorway to Tuam.
