A family-owned pharmacy remains open for business today despite a truck smashing into the front of the premises in the early hours.

Major damage was caused to O'Donnell's Total Health Pharmacy at around 2.50am in Charlestown, Co Mayo.

It came as authorities around the country warned people to be careful on roads and paths following freezing rain overnight, which has left many surfaces hazardous.

A garda spokesperson said: "A truck collided with a traffic island and then collided with a parked vehicle and caused extensive damage to a building on Market Square."

The driver of the truck was brought to hospital but there were no serious injuries caused.

Ian Johnson, who runs the pharmacy with wife Nuala O'Donnell, said that while the front of the property has been badly damaged, the dispensary area remains okay with access available to the public.

Mr Johnson said: "There's a gaping hole with a truck. My dispensary is running, I've a side door at the back for anyone who needs anything."

Mr Johnson added that roads in the area were "absolutely lethal" overnight.

The business has building and engineering experts assessing the damage and ensuring that the property, a standalone building in Market Square in Charlestown, is safe.

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow ice warning for 18 counties across the country from 5pm to 9am tomorrow.
