A Galway musician has been selected as the winner of a prestigious international competition that recognises banjo-playing skills.

Enda Scahill has been named as the 2022 recipient of The Steve Martin Banjo Prize. The award was launched by the actor and comedian in 2010, to promote the instrument and honour the variety of music styles associated with it.

Mr Scahill is a member of We Banjo 3, and a four-time All Ireland champion. He specialises in the tenor banjo and has toured and recorded extensively in recent years.

He was selected as the winner of the award by judges who described his playing as representing "excellence in 4-string Irish banjo traditions".

Another player, Bill Evans from the US, was also honoured. The winning musicians will split a $25,000 (€24,380) prize fund between them.
