Stunning photographs from Mullaghmore in County Sligo have topped the winners list in a coastal photography competition.

The annual Love Your Coast photography competition has been running for 13 years, inviting photographers to "capture the uniqueness of our coastal landscape, heritage, wildlife, communities and more".

The overall winner of this year's competition was 'Splash' by Darragh Gorman. As well as being awarded Image of the Year, the photo also took first place in the Coastal Landscape section.

Mr Gorman said he has been photographing storms at Mullaghmore for the last ten years and it is always spectacular and wild "but this was extra special as the offshore winds were blowing into the face of the crashing waves and lifting skyward".

Two other photographs, by different photographers, featuring the seaside village which is known for big wave surfing, won top prize in the Coastal Heritage, and People and the Coast categories.

'In the Shadow of a Giant!' was the title of the photograph taken by Brian Campbell which won the Coastal Heritage prize. Showing Classiebawn Castle, the shot was taken with a long lens from over 10km away.

The third prize to go to a photograph featuring Mullaghmore was taken by Gary McCall. 'Conor Maguire surfs the largest wave ever ridden in Ireland' won the People and the Coast Category.

Adrian Handoff's photograph 'Labyrinth' taken at Dunmore Head in Co Kerry won the Creativity and the Coast category while 'Compass Jelly' by Aoife Hester won the Wildlife Underwater award. Her photograph was taken at Sandycove in Co Dublin.

Over 1,100 entries were received for the competition and after a break of two years when the awards were presented virtually, this year's prize ceremony was held at Smock Alley in Dublin.

The photography competition is one of a number of initiatives by Clean Coasts to create a "tangible and immediate improvement on Ireland's coastal environment".
