A Co Leitrim distillery has won the International Spirit Brand of the Year at the 2022 Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards.

Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin was competing against some of the biggest spirit brands in the world for the award and was the only Irish company in the short-list which included Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's Teremana Tequila and Moët Hennessy's Ardbeg representing Scotland.

The film star and former wrestler congratulated the Irish distillery on Twitter, and said he was looking forward to sampling their tipple.

The family-owned Shed Distillery where the gin is produced employs over 80 people in Drumshanbo.

Only launched in 2016, Drumshanbo Gunpowder Gin now sells in over 80 countries and the company says it is one of the fastest growing super-premium gin brands in the world with listings in prestigious venues including Disney and Cunard in the US, Claridge's in London and The Four Seasons in New York.

Founder of The Shed Distillery, PJ Rigney, described the award as an extraordinary honour and a credit to the team and the community of Drumshanbo.

The Shed Distillery also produces vodka and whiskey and has a visitor experience with a restaurant and bar.

The annual Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards are regarded as a global industry benchmark and the winners will be honoured at a black-tie gala in January 2023 in San Francisco.
