Three men have appeared before a special sitting of Sligo District Court tonight charged in connection with the aggravated burglary at the home of Tom Niland in Skreen in Sligo on 18 January last.

Detective Sergeant Michael Kelly gave evidence of arresting and charging each of the men.

33-year-old John Clarke, of Carrowkelly, Ballina, Co Mayo, was charged with aggravated burglary with a knife at the home of Mr Niland.

Detective Kelly said he arrested and charged him at Sligo Garda Station this afternoon and said he made no reply to the charge.

54-year-old Francis Harmon, of 10 Nephin Court, Killala Road, Ballina, was also charged with aggravated burglary with a knife. He was arrested by Det Kelly at Ballymote and charged at 5.50pm today and made no reply to the charge.

28-year-old John Irving of Shanwar, Foxford, Co Mayo, was was also charged with aggravated burglary with a knife.

He was arrested by Det Kelly at Carrick-on-Shannon and charged at 7.26pm this evening and made no reply to the charge.

There were no applications for bail on behalf of the men.

Judge Sandra Murphy remanded all three men in custody to appear again at Sligo District Court next Wednesday 16 March.

She also granted free legal aid to each of the accused.

Mr Niland remains in a serious condition in hospital.
