Work on the demolition of a disused hotel in Galway is due to get under way, years after plans to knock the building were first mooted.

The former Corrib Great Southern Hotel on the Dublin Road has been vacant for well over a decade.

The demolition will take around four months to complete.

The first stage of the process will see fencing erected around the perimeter, before the site is stripped and materials are segregated for disposal.

It is expected that work on knocking the concrete structure will not begin until November.

The building has been targeted by vandals in recent years and has been extensively damaged by a number of fires.

Galway City Council said any future development of the site will be subject to the planning process.

The property is one of a number of buildings around the city being targeted by the local authority, as part of an effort to deal with abandoned premises.

Demolition work at the former Connacht laundry site, on St. Helen’s Street, was completed earlier this year.

And the former Oasis nightclub in Salthill was reduced to rubble in recent days.

Once packed to the rafters with students and visitors to the area, it had also been lying idle for over ten years.
