Plans to construct a new pedestrian bridge over the River Corrib in Galway have been approved by An Bord Pleanála.
The proposed pedestrian and cycle bridge would be located around 20 metres downstream from the Salmon Weir Bridge, in the city centre.
Galway City Council says it would play a part in the development of a new transport corridor across the city, aimed at reducing congestion and cutting carbon emissions.
The structure will be the first new river crossing to be provided in over three decades.
It will be located between Gaol Road and Newtownsmith.

The initiative forms part of the Galway Transport Strategy.
Last September, An Bord Pleanála ruled the proposed development would not be likely to have significant effects on the environment and that the preparation and submission of an environmental impact assessment report was not required.
A subsequent objection to a Compulsory Purchase Order, for land required for the project, was withdrawn earlier this year.
Galway City Council says it hopes construction work will begin early next year.
